Mr. van Akkooi was appointed Senior Vice President, Government Relations at Kinross Gold in May 2017. Prior to joining Kinross, he held various global government and corporate affairs roles with BHP Billiton across the company’s minerals and petroleum portfolio based in Singapore, Houston and lastly in Melbourne. In November 2015 he was dispatched to Brazil to act as BHP Billiton’s interim Head of Corporate Affairs for Brazil directly following the Samarco tailings dam tragedy. A native of the Netherlands, he joined BHP Billiton after a diverse career in international politics with the Netherlands Government.

Mr. van Akkooi holds a Masters Degree in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Amsterdam and an executive MBA from HEC Paris.
