Sherritt to Begin Boca Expansion Procurement this Quarter - Cuba

The Honourable Helena Guergis, Secretary of State (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) (Sport), will visit San Salvador, El Salvador, from May 12 to 14, as part of Canada’s renewed engagement in the Americas.

El Salvador is an important partner for Canada in Central America and in multilateral forums such as the Organization of American States,” said Secretary of State Guergis. “The trip will reinforce our re-engagement with the Americas and provide an excellent opportunity to exchange views on crucial issues of security, prosperity and the core values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.”

While in San Salvador, Secretary of State Guergis is scheduled to meet with President Elías Antonio Saca, Minister of Foreign Affairs Marisol Argueta de Barillas and other key officials. The Secretary of State will also meet with national and local government officials, representatives of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in El Salvador and a range of development and investment experts.

Canada’s engagement with El Salvador includes strong economic ties as well as cooperation on the international response in Haiti, where members of the Salvadoran civilian police are working with Canadian colleagues.

The dynamic bilateral relationship is reinforced by the tens of thousands of Canadians who trace their roots to El Salvador, and who are contributing to the development and prosperity of both countries.

IDC: 64% of Latin American information workforce connected
(Business News Americas)

Excerpt from original article:

"Some 64% of the information workforce is either hyperconnected or increasingly connected in Latin America, according to a report by consultancy IDC, commissioned by Canadian equipment supplier Nortel Networks.

The Latin American market was the top performer in the world at 64%, followed by Asia Pacific coming in at 59%, Europe at 50% and North America at 44%.

Participants of the study were at least 18 years old, fully employed, used a PC at work and a PDA or mobile phone for business or personal activities. Of the participants sampled, 379 were from Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, the three countries representing Latin America in the survey.

The study suggests that although the region has traditionally been known as a latecomer in terms of technology adoption, Latin America's workforce is now showing a willingness to leapfrog its way to a digital information society, Romina Adduci, IDC's telecom research & consulting director for Latin America, said upon presenting the results. …"

Sherritt to Begin Boca Expansion Procurement this Quarter - Cuba
(Business News Americas )

Toronto-based Sherritt expects to begin procurement this quarter of the major components of a 150MW expansion at the Boca de Jaruco thermo plant in Cuba, company CFO Dean Chambers said in a webcast.

Pricing for most of the major components has been confirmed and should be finalized over the next several weeks.

The Cdn $247mn (US$246mn) combined cycle expansion is due to come online by late 2010 or early 2011.

The expansion will increase Sherritt's capacity in Cuba to 526MW. The Canadian firm operates in the Caribbean country's power sector through JV Energas, which includes Cuba's respective oil and power companies Cupet and UNE.

Energas also operates plants Varadero and Puerto Escondido, which along with Boca de Jaruco currently total 376MW.

Power production reached 597GWh in January-March, up 22.6% from 1Q07 due to a 65MW expansion in mid-2007.

Power production in 2Q08 is expected to reach 565GWh, Chambers said. Output this year is projected to total 2,400GWh.

Crystallex Falls as Venezuela Shuts Door on New Gold Mines
(National Post)

Excerpt from original article:

Venezuela on Thursday shut the door to new gold projects and threatened other mining and logging concessions, in a new step by left-wing President Hugo Chavez to tighten control of natural resources.

The ban on mining in the mineral-laden Imataca Forest Reserve forest reserve and end to permits for open pits was a blow to Crystallex and Gold Reserve.

Crystallex closed down 16 cents, or 16%, at 84 cents on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Gold Reserve was down 20 cents, or 9%, at $1.96. The Canadian companies have long been seeking environmental permits to exploit their concessions in the reserve.

Environment Minister Yuviri Ortega said the South American nation also was revising all mining and timber concessions.

" Venezuela will deny environmental permits for open-pit mine exploitation," Ortega told Reuters. "Neither private or public companies will for now explore Imataca's gold."

Imataca Forest Reserve, in the remote south-east of the Venezuela, contains what is believed to be one of Latin America's largest gold deposits.
