Special Announcements

Minister Bernier Welcomes Colombia's Vice-President to Canada

The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that Colombia’s Vice-President Francisco Santos Calderón is visiting Canada from May 6 to 9, 2008.

“I am pleased to welcome Vice-President Santos to Canada,” said Minister Bernier. “I look forward to continuing the discussions that we began during my visit to Bogotá in February.

“The Colombian government has made significant progress in its efforts to promote peace and to lay the groundwork for greater prosperity. While in Colombia, I had the opportunity to witness the real contribution that Canada is making to these efforts.”

Vice-President Santos is travelling to Canada to promote investment in Colombia and to strengthen relations between the two countries. During his meetings, he will discuss development assistance to Colombia and Canada-Colombia labour cooperation, as well as trade and investment issues.

In addition to meeting with Minister Bernier, the Vice-President will meet with Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Gerry Ritz, Minister of the Environment John Baird, Minister of International Cooperation Beverley Oda, and trade officials. He will also meet with Canadian business people, civil society organizations and academics to share views on recent developments in Colombia.

Canada’s engagement with Colombia includes free trade negotiations and development assistance, as well as support to Colombia’s peace processes and continuing dialogue on human rights. Canada supports Colombia’s chairmanship of the upcoming General Assembly of the Organization of American States to be held in Medellín, Colombia, June 1 to 3. The growing relationship between the two countries reflects the dynamic community of over 40,000 Canadians of Colombian origin.

Regional News

President Felipe Calderón and World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick Highlight New Strategic Partnership
(World Bank News & Broadcast)

Summary of original article:

Mexico ’s renewed partnership with World Bank is different from traditional lending operations. At the end of a two-day visit in the country, World Bank President Robert B. Zoellick together with President Felope Calder ón outlined the knowledge sharing services, technical assistance and new financial mechanisms in store for the nation.

It’s a unique loan meant to fund Mexico’s efforts to fight climate change, sustaining growth, and competitiveness.

President Calderon and Mr. Zoellick also discussed the world food crisis, and the bank is now "expanding more flexible financial products and knowledge and learning services that are better suited to respond to the challenges that middle income countries in Latin America are facing.

The new Country Partnership Strategy for Mexico recognizes this by moving to a new business model that supports the government’s own national development strategy and provides advisory services tailored to country demands," according a World Bank press release.

Latin American Airlines Thriving Despite Costs: Economic Growth Creates Millions of First-time Flyers
(National Post)

Excerpt from original article by Todd Benson and Chris Aspin:

" Latin America's major airlines are still going strong despite skyrocketing fuel prices, buoyed by growing passenger traffic as the region's economies expand at a healthy clip.

From Chile to Mexico, air travel is surging as economic gains trickle down to the masses, allowing millions to fly for the first time. Thanks to the jump in demand, fierce cost-cutting and often steep fares, Latin America's top carriers are either making money or moving closer to profitability while the rest of the industry is bleeding losses.

In Brazil, where two deadly plane crashes and an air traffic control crisis in the past year and a half have done little to cool the aviation market, foreign carriers and new players are lining up to get a piece of the pie.

In recent months, Germany's Lufthansa, LAN Peru and TAP Portugal have all signed code-share agreements with TAM Linhas Aereas, Brazil's leading airline. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Air France followed suit, teaming up with TAM's rival, Gol Linhas Aereas. …"

Half of Argentine 2007/08 Crop Retained in the Farms
(MercoPress)

Excerpt from original article:

"The extended Argentine farmers/government conflict, which was triggered in early March when the new sliding export taxes system was announced, and its renewed eight days of protest, have left an estimated 44 million tons of grains and oil seeds unsold, valued in approximately 12 billion US dollars, according to market analysts interviewed by the Buenos Aires press.

The 44 million unsold tons are equivalent to 45% of the 2007/08 harvest which is forecasted to be Argentina’s second record with 96.8 million tons equivalent to 25 billion US dollars.

Non exported grains will inevitably have an impact for the Argentine government coffers since it will have limited access to collecting the controversial export tax if farmers hold on to their crops. …"
