Special Announcements Canada - Peru: Conclusions of FTA Negotiations Minister Emerson met with Mercedes Aráoz Fernandez, Peruvian Minister of International Trade and Tourism, on the margins of the World Economic Forum in Through this FTA, greater stability, transparency and protection for Canadian investments in Peru has been achieved, building on the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement signed by the two countries in 2006. " Provisions with respect to environmental protection, biodiversity and corporate social responsibility are included in an environment agreement. For the first time in Canadian FTA negotiations, agreement has also been reached n the establishment of a Trade Related Cooperation Committee to oversee trade-related capacity building activities associated with the FTA. A new Oak Ridge National Laboratory study found the countries have sufficient feedstock to make this huge increase over current production possible. As reported by Science Daily, one of the lead researchers of recently released ORNL study on sugarcane industry, Gbadebo Oladosu, said: "Current feedstock production, based on traditional crops such as sugarcane, soybeans and palm oil, has the potential to double or triple by 2017 in some cases." "One of the urgent projects is the Guatemalan-Mexican inter-connection, which would contribute 200 additional megawatts, but confronts serious difficulties in completion, said Guatemalan Energy and Mining Minister Romeo Rodriguez." The country is looking for investment in for renewable energy programs to replace their current predominant energy source, oil. Despite the great number of water bodies throughout the country, only 52 per cent of hydroelectricity is produced. Most electricity is produced by oil combustion, so Guatemala has to purchase oil abroad, at continually higher cost.
